“It’s like if anime met Cubism”
— Chris Costa, Curator / Artist
Conrad Square is a multidisciplinary currently residing in Melbourne (Naarm), Australia.
As a child growing up in a small-town, Square was deprived of authentic inspiration from his peers and surroundings. So, he would get lost in books (and magazines) of any creative sort, to satisfy his colourful imagination. Spending days in his bedroom drawing; accompanied by skateboarding posters, hip-hop music, and Japanese animation and manga.
On his 18th birthday, he received the title Street Logos, which saw his world become infused with stickers, stencils, paste-ups, and aerosol characters they called "street art". That collection of works proved to be the first step in his marathon obsession with everything the outside galleries had to offer.
Over the years, Square’s signature robots have transpired into their own symbolic language, to represent the cultural, economic, political, and environmental values of the working-class. Square uses his artistic tool-kit as a visual protest to rebel against these social normalities, as he transcends his practices between his studio and the urban landscape.
