“It’s like if anime met Cubism”

— Chris Costa, Curator / Artist

Conrad Square is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia.

As a child growing up in a small-town, Square was eager to discover inspiration of any creative sort to satisfy his colourful imagination. Spending days in his bedroom drawing; accompanied by skateboarding posters, hip-hop music, and Japanese animation and manga.

Everything changed on his 18th birthday, when he was gifted the title Street Logos, which saw his world become infused with stickers, stencils, paste-ups, and aerosol characters they called "street art". That collection of works proved to be the first step in his marathon obsession with everything the outside galleries had to offer.

Over time, Square’s signature robots developed into a symbolic language of their own—speaking on the cultural, economic, political, and environmental values of the working class. Square uses his artistic tool-kit as a visual protest to challenge these social normalities, as he transcends his practices between his studio and the urban landscape.
